How to Cancel Your Google One Subscription

Cancel Google One storage plans and understand what happens to your Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos when you go over the free 15 GB limit.

Google One is Google's paid storage service, extending the 15 GB of free storage shared across Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos. Plans start at $1.99/month for 100 GB. Cancelling is simple, but the consequences for your data depend on how much storage you're using — and many people are storing far more than 15 GB without realising it.

1

How to Cancel Google One on the Web

Go to one.google.com and sign in with your Google account. Click "Manage" next to your storage plan. In the plan management section, click "Cancel plan". Google will confirm the cancellation date and remind you of the free storage limit. Your storage remains at the paid level until the end of the current billing period, then reverts to 15 GB. You'll receive a confirmation email. Alternatively, cancel through the Google Play Store if you subscribed on an Android device: Play Store → profile → Payments & subscriptions → Google One → Cancel.

2

What Happens When You Go Over 15 GB After Cancelling

If your current storage usage exceeds 15 GB when your paid plan ends, your account enters a storage-over-limit state. In this state: you cannot send or receive emails in Gmail, you cannot upload new files to Drive, and Google Photos stops backing up new photos. Existing files are not immediately deleted — Google gives you at least 2 years before considering removal of data in accounts that are significantly over limit. However, to avoid any disruption to Gmail and Photos, you should reduce your storage usage before cancelling.

3

How to Check and Reduce Your Google Storage

Go to one.google.com/storage to see a breakdown of your current storage usage by product. Google Photos: you can free up space by deleting photos already backed up to the cloud (open Photos → Manage storage → Free up device storage) or by removing duplicate and blurry photos. Gmail: emails with large attachments use the most space. Search for "has:attachment larger:5MB" in Gmail to find and delete large email threads. Drive: go to drive.google.com, sort by storage used, and delete large files or empty your trash.

Google One Benefits Beyond Storage

Google One includes some benefits beyond storage that you lose when you cancel: VPN by Google One (available on some plans), Google Store discounts, and access to Google experts for account support. The VPN is the most practically relevant — if you use it, factor that into your decision or switch to a dedicated VPN service before cancelling. The storage itself can sometimes be replaced by alternative services: iCloud for iPhone users, OneDrive for Microsoft 365 subscribers, or Dropbox for cross-platform use.
